Intel starts shipping Atom N2600, N2800 processors for netbooks, ten hours of battery life promised

We've already seen a few benchmarks and other hints that they'd soon be shipping, and Intel has now officially announced that its new Cedar Trail Atom processors are finally available, with the first systems using them set to roll out early next year. The two chips you'll likely be seeing the most of are the Atom N2600 and N2800 -- both dual-core, and both designed for use in netbooks, where they promise to allow for up to ten hours of battery life and "weeks of standby," and offer support for 1080p video playback. Also rolling out today are the D2500 and D2700, which are designed for use in entry-level desktops and all-in-one computers, as well as more commercial systems. As for all those systems themselves, details remain a bit light, but Intel says you can expect to see some from Acer, Asus, HP, Lenovo, Samsung, and Toshiba.

Putin rejects suggestions of talks with opposition (AP)

MOSCOW ? Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has rejected the possibility of talks with opposition leaders who drew tens of thousands of people to protest rallies across the country.

The prime minister told Russian news agencies on Wednesday that "there's no one to talk to" among the leaders.

Putin's authority was dented by a recent parliamentary election in which his party lost 25 percent of seats despite widespread allegations of vote-rigging in its favor.

The vote fraud triggered the country's largest protest rallies in 20 years that demanded a rerun of the vote and Putin's resignation.

Putin on Tuesday firmly rejected the protesters' demands.

Putin served as Russia's president in 2000-2008 and is now seeking a third term in office.

Gameloft fends off winter blues with dollar sale on Android Market

The French game publisher already sprinkled 99¢ allspice on its iOS and Amazon Appstore titles, plus a two-for-one deal on the Xperia Play, but soon it'll bring that volume-not-margin recipe to the Android Market too. Almost all of its paid titles will reportedly go for less than a dollar between December 26th and January 5th, so if you're about to click 'Buy' on a premium purchase like Asphalt 6: Adrenalin, 9mm or The Adventures of Tintin, then it might be worth relaxing your trigger finger. The notable exception is Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation, which will apparently only be discounted for a single day sometime around New Year's Weekend -- though hopefully not while you're still preoccupied with running around in yesterday's clothes and hugging random strangers.

Ford Explorer Fuel Gauge Doesn't Work

Questions and Answers

Ford Explorer Fuel Gauge Doesn't Work

Q. Hi: I have a 1993 Ford Explorer with 160,000 miles. Recently I had to replace the gas tank because of rust around the inlet. The new one was installed, and the gas gauge quit working. The shop checked the sending unit and it was fine, they said the gauge was bad and replaced it, still the same problem. we have checked the gauge, the ground, continuity from sending unit to gauge and still nothing. Have you ever run into this problem?

Thanks,
Bill

Ford Explorer Fuel Gauge Doesn't Work

A. The fuel gauge and fuel sending unit are very easy to test and in about 15 minutes you will know exactly what's wrong.

First thing you need to do is check all the fuses and make sure you are getting power to the gauge. Then check the black/yellow wire at the fuel tank connector and make sure you have a good ground.

If power and ground are good, then ground the yellow/white wire at the fuel tank connector. If the fuel gauge goes all the way to FULL, you have a bad sending unit. If it stays at Empty, you have a bad gauge or an open in the yellow/white wire.

Ford has a special tester for the Anti-Slosh module. But if you replaced the fuel level sending unit and fuel gauge, and assuming the wiring is indeed good, then it's a pretty good bet the Anti-Slosh module is bad.

Back in campaign mode, presidential hopefuls focus (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Republicans in search of their party's presidential nomination are returning to campaign mode after a brief Christmas respite, with Rick Santorum planning a hunting trip with conservatives in Iowa and Mitt Romney phoning supporters.

With just a week until Iowa holds its leadoff caucuses and many still undecided, the final push ahead of the Jan. 3 contests was heading into a critical time. Campaigns planned new television ads and phone calls to persuade holdout caucusgoers still weighing their options.

Romney, who kept this state at arm's length for most of the year, seemed to increase his efforts in Iowa as polls found him in a stronger position. He planned to talk with supporters in a series of telephone calls here and to New Hampshire and Florida on Monday between working on a speech that aides described as his final pitch to Iowans. Romney planned to deliver that speech Tuesday evening and then set out on a bus tour of Iowa.

However, he was to share the highways with Rep. Michele Bachmann, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. All scheduled bus tours to start then, too.

Each is running out of time and looking to derail Rep. Ron Paul, the Texas congressman who seems to have the most sophisticated network of volunteers ready to organize ahead of the caucuses. Paul was to return to Iowa this week to meet with supporters he has kept in touch with since his unsuccessful run in 2008.

Others, too, were ready to turn on their own political machines and had fresh ads ready to air.

Gingrich, who last week criticized the negative tone of the campaign, was ready to directly challenge Romney on the economy, an issue Romney has made central to his campaign. Gingrich's standing in public and private polls has slipped as he faced unrelenting criticism from the candidates and their allies.

Gingrich was expected to use clips from Romney's previous campaigns distancing himself from President Ronald Reagan and pitch Gingrich's economic plan as "Reaganomics 2.0." Gingrich also was expected to compare Romney's tax plan with his own.

Santorum, meanwhile, planned to announce support from another wave of Iowa conservatives. He scheduled a pheasant hunting trip in Adel for Monday afternoon. While he trails in polls and has not spent significant money on ads, Santorum is hoping his nonstop courtship of Iowans yields a late surge. He visited all 99 of Iowa's counties during the summer ? an accomplishment Bachmann has feverishly tried to replicate.

Bachmann, a congresswoman from Minnesota, last week darted through small towns, reminding voters that Santorum lost his 2006 re-election bid in a blowout and that Paul's foreign policy views were outside the party's orthodoxy. Looking to recapture voters' interest, her plan was to return to hand-to-hand campaigning on Tuesday.

Perry, too, was looking to keep up his message: his rivals are insiders unable to change Washington. He planned to return to his tour bus on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman kept his focus on New Hampshire. Early in the campaign, he said he would not compete in Iowa and instead make his start in New Hampshire, which comes second on the nominating calendar.

Canada: Muslim 'honor killing' heats up national debate

?

Afghan-born man, his wife, and their son on trial for allegedly killing daughters because they defied family rules on dress, dating and socializing. Psychiatrist: Immigrants can't practice their own cultural ideologies if they go against the grain

Associated Press

On a summer morning in 2009, in canal locks east of Toronto, police made a grisly discovery: In a submerged Nissan car were the bodies of three teenage sisters and a 52-year-old woman.

?

A joyride gone tragically wrong, claimed the father, Mohammad Shafia, 58, who reported the disappearance. An "honor killing," prosecutors allege. A murder trial is under way, heating up a national debate about how to better absorb immigrants into the Canadian cultural mainstream.

?

Related articles:

?

The prosecution accuses Afghan-born Shafia, his wife, and their 20-year-old son of killing the daughters because they dishonored the family by defying its disciplinarian rules on dress, dating, socializing and going online. The older victim was Shafia's first wife, Rona Amir Mohammad, who was living with him and his second wife, Tooba Mohammad Yahya, 41, in Montreal. It was a polygamous relationship, the court has been told, and if revealed, could have resulted in their deportation.

?

The parents and son, Hamed, have pleaded not guilty to four counts of murder.

?

The family had left Afghanistan in 1992 and lived in Pakistan, Australia and Dubai before settling in Canada in 2007. Shafia, a wealthy businessman, married Yahya because his first wife could not have children. The second marriage produced seven children.

?

The months leading up to the deaths were not happy ones in the Shafia household, the court has heard. Zainab, the oldest at 19, was forbidden to attend school for a year because she had a young Pakistani-Canadian boyfriend, and she fled to a shelter, terrified of her father, the court was told.

?

The jury heard testimony that Zainab's sisters, Sahar, 17, and Geeti, 13, were hounded and trailed by their brothers because the parents suspected them of dating boys; that Sahar repeatedly said her father would kill her if he found out she had a boyfriend; that she had bruises on her arms; that Mohammad, the first wife who was helping to raise the children, also was brutally treated.

?

Zainab ran away from home for a couple of weeks and her sisters contacted authorities, saying they wanted to be removed from the home because of violence and their father's strict parenting, the prosecution said.

?

Prosecutor Laurie Lacelle presented wire taps and cell phone records from the Shafia family in court. In one phone conversation, the father says his daughters "betrayed us immensely."

?

Fazil Javad, Shafia's brother-in-law, said Shafia tried to enlist him in a plan to drown Zainab.

?

"Even if they hoist me up to the gallows, nothing is more dear to me than my honor. There is nothing more valuable than our honor," Lacelle quoted Shafia as saying in an intercept transcript.

?

Taking the stand and speaking in his native Dari through an interpreter, Shafia portrayed himself as a loving father with his daughters' best interests at heart. He repeated his contention that the famil members were returning from a Niagara Falls holiday, were in two cars, and were overnighting at a motel when Zainab took one of the cars.

?

The daughters met an accidental but "rightful" death for their disobedience, he said.

?

"You believe there's no value in life without honor, don't you?" asked Lacelle in cross-examination.

?

"My honor is important to me," Shafia replied. "But you can't regain your honor with murder, respected lady, you must know that.

?

"I'm a strict Muslim, but I'm not a killer."

?

Other relatives - two of the children and a brother-in-law of Shafia - testified in support of the joyride scenario and portrayed the family as loving and caring.

?

The trial then adjourned for the holidays and will resume on Jan. 9.

?

Canada takes in 250,000 immigrants a year, more per capita than anywhere save Australia, and in recent years a number of so-called honor killings have prompted debate about absorbing immigrants into the mainstream and dealing with culture clashes between immigrant parents and their children. Even before the trial, Rona Ambrose, the women's affairs minister, had said the federal government was considering making such killings a separate category in the criminal code.

?

Her office has not replied to recent questions about whether the change is going through, and the debate continues about the larger issues the Shafia case has raised about assimilating immigrants.

?

More than 80 Canadian Muslim organizations, imams and community leaders have signed a call for action against "the reality of domestic violence within our own communities, compounded by abhorrent and yet persistent pre-Islamic practices rooted in the misguided notion of restoring family honor."

?

On the other hand, statistically, nonimmigrant Canadians have a higher rate of murdering spouses and children, in some instances, also over family dishonor. Jeffrey Reitz, a sociology professor at the University of Toronto who specializes in immigration issues, warns against using the term honor killings and equating it with any specific culture.

?

"If you label it an honor killing, the tendency is to say, `Oh, what a terrible culture that is,' and the problem (of domestic violence) stems across cultural groups," he said.

?

The United Nations reports 5,000 females a year are victims of honor killings around the world. In Canada, social worker Aruna Papp says she has counted 15 cases since 2002, while psychiatrist Amin Muhammad, commissioned to write a report for the government about honor killings in Canada, predicts there will be more as immigrant communities grow, bringing in some newcomers with militant cultural beliefs.

?

"Immigrants who come here can't bring their own mindsets with them. They can't practice their own cultural ideologies if they go against the grain," he said.

?

The government must do more, and offer services that are more visible and accessible, especially to non-English-speakers, he said.

?

Tarek Fatah, the Pakistani-born founder of the Muslim Canadian Congress, is a fierce opponent of Islamic militancy. He says it is shocking that honor killings are happening in Canada, calling them "a slap in the face of our fundamental value of what it is to be a human being."

?

Papp, the social worker who wrote a report on honor killings for the Frontier Centre for Public Policy, a privately funded conservative think tank, worries that domestic violence rooted in family honor has spread to second-generation families. She argues for tougher background checks on would-be immigrants, as well as teaching immigrants Canadian rights and values.

?

Papp, who is of Indian descent, speaks from experience. "I came here when I was 21, with a third-grade education. I had children when I was young. I didn't know how to properly parent," she said. "I did and said things I didn't know at the time were wrong, things my parents did and said to me growing up that were acceptable within the Indian culture. It's a learning process. Parents, especially immigrant parents, need to be taught parenting skills and what's acceptable behavior here."

Hawaii hospital workers jobless on Christmas Eve (AP)

HONOLULU ? More than 200 employees at a pair of bankrupt hospitals in Hawaii are getting notices that they're losing their jobs on Christmas Eve.

The operators of the Hawaii Medical Center hospitals on Oahu plan to close the facilities, putting nearly 1,000 people out of work. More than 200 got notices Friday saying they'll be laid off effective Saturday.

The closures were announced after the hospitals' former owner and largest secured creditor objected to a potential sale.

Less than 60 patients remain at the hospitals. Hawaii Medical Center CEO Maria Kostylo says they will be discharged or transferred in the next week or two.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports that state officials are bracing for the closures to swell Hawaii's unemployment rate at a time when jobs are already hard to come by.

Clarke asks his team to play fair against India

Argentina News.Net
Saturday 24th December, 2011 (IANS)

Australian captain Michael Clarke has asked his teammates to play fair against India in the four-Test series starting Monday with the Boxing Day Test here, and warned of punishment if they don't.

Clarke said he wanted to avoid any bad blood between the two teams.

'Both teams understand where we are at, the relationship between the Australia team and the India team could not be stronger. We all understand there is a line you can go to but there is a line you can't cross,' Clarke told reporters in the pre-match press conference here at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

'I can guarantee you that nobody in the Australian team will cross that and if they do, there will be punishments from the ICC but also from Cricket Australia,' he sternly added.

'We will be doing everything in our power to play some really competitive, tough cricket. But we understand and acknowledge that we won't cross that line.'

India's previous tour Down Under four years ago was marred by controversies with the 'monkeygate' fiasco between Harbhajan Singh and Andrew Symonds taking the centre stage.

Symonds and Singh have since happily played alongside each other in the Indian Premier League. Symonds has retired from international cricket and Singh wasn't selected for the current series.

'The relationship between the Australian players and the Indian players is very good and will continue to be that way,' Clarke said.

'Both teams have a lot to play for. It has always been very competitive on the field but off the field both teams get on very well.'

Talking about the great Sachin Tendulkar, Clarke hoped that the master blaster scores his much-awaited 100th hundred in his next series.

'Tendulkar scoring his 100th international ton is certainly a prospect. I hope that doesn't happen. I hope he scores it in his next series,' said Clarke.

'He has been an unbelievable player for such a long period of time. I really enjoy watching him bat. If he does score the 100th century, he deserves every bit of credit and applause,' he added.

Really wanted a tablet for Christmas but the high prices put you off? Well Dixons online in the UK could well have come to the rescue by dropping the price of the HTC Flyer to £199 for the wifi only version.

While shipping with Gingerbread, it's important to remember before dismissing the idea that the wifi version of the Flyer will be getting a Honeycomb update like it's 3G brother. That's quite a lot of tablet for £199. Hit the source link below for more info.

Rwandan rebel freed after intn'l charges dropped (AP)

THE HAGUE, Netherlands ? The International Criminal Court freed a Rwandan rebel Friday and returned him to France after dismissing murder and rape charges against him.

Callixte Mbarushimana, who spent 11 months in detention, was the first war crimes suspect to be arrested and freed without trial since the court began work in 2002 as the world's first permanent war crimes tribunal.

The court said Mbarushimana, who had lived in Paris before his arrest, was "released on French territory, as he requested" through the cooperation of the Netherlands and France.

Mbarushimana was charged with five counts of murder, rape, torture and persecution allegedly committed by Rwandan rebels in neighboring Congo.

In a 2-1 decision, pretrial judges ruled last week that the evidence against him was insufficient to warrant a trial, and ordered him freed.

Prosecutors lost an appeal last Tuesday, but his release was delayed because he was still the subject of a U.N. travel ban. France asked for a delay to allow time to clear his transfer with the U.N. Sanctions Committee.

Prosecutors accused Mbarushimana of being a senior member of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda, known by its French acronym FDLR, which is made up of former guerrillas accused of genocide in Rwanda's 1994 ethnic slaughter.

The group's killing spree in Congo in 2009 that left hundreds dead was aimed at forcing Rwanda to accept their return.

Prosecutors allege that Mbarushimana's role was coordinating "an international campaign of propaganda and extortion" aimed at furthering the FDLR cause.

Mbarushimana signed his name to FDLR press releases issued from Paris, but denied his group was involved in atrocities. He described the FDLR as a political and military organization intent on bringing reform to Rwanda.

It was yet another narrow escape for Mbarushimana, a former computer technician for the U.N. Development Program, who has evaded trial several times for the 1994 genocide and the ensuing struggle. Some half a million Tutsis were murdered by ethnic Hutus in 100 days in the summer of 1994.

Mbarushimana was arrested and held for two months in 2001while working for the U.N. in Kosovo before he was released because his indictment was faulty. Later he was indicted by the International Criminal Court for Rwanda, but again his case was dropped, apparently because the court was focusing on higher-level suspects. In 2008 he was arrested in Frankfurt when German authorities found his name on the U.N. sanctions list. He was released four months later.

Does Israel care about the Diaspora?

Michael Freund - Dec 15, 2011
The Jerusalem Post

Given the breathless and often frenzied pace of events in the Middle East, it is no surprise that Israel's media is one of the most vibrant and energetic around. Hardly an hour seems to go by without a crisis somewhere coming to the fore, be it in the diplomatic, security or political spheres. Social tensions, the religious-secular divide and even the level of water in the Kinneret provide journalists with plenty of fodder with which to fill the airwaves. Indeed, the idea of a "quiet news cycle" in our part of the world sounds more like a Messianic longing than a candid journalist's lament.
But for all of their extensive coverage of a wide variety of topics, there is one key subject matter that the Israeli media systematically and consistently overlook: Jewish life in the Diaspora.
Leafing through the daily Hebrew newspapers or watching the evening news, it is easy to forget that there is a big, wide Jewish world out there.
Virtually nothing is written about Jewish life abroad, despite the fact that more than half of the world's Jews live overseas.
There is no coverage of the challenges that Jews face, their triumphs and setbacks, nor of the rich Jewish intellectual and cultural life that exists.
On the rare occasions when the Diaspora does get a few column inches or a minute or two of airtime, it often revolves around anti-Semitism or scandal, as though that is the sum total of the contemporary Jewish experience.
In other instances, when there is a clash of sorts regarding Israeli policy, whether toward conversion or the Palestinians, the Israeli press will suddenly ? and all too briefly ? rediscover our foreign brethren before quickly moving along to another subject.
Days or even weeks can then pass without a single in-depth story appearing about Diaspora Jewish life.
It is tempting to suggest that in this instance the media are simply reflecting the will of their readers. After all, like any business, newspapers and television need to cater to what their consumers demand. So perhaps the Israeli media's lack of interest in the Diaspora is merely a sign of a larger trend in Israeli society?
Nothing could be further from the truth.
DOES ISRAEL care about the Diaspora? The answer is an unequivocal yes.
The results of a recent survey demonstrate conclusively that Israelis have a direct and very personal link to the subject.
This past summer, the Sixth Annual B'nai B'rith World Center Survey of Contemporary Israel Opinion Toward Diaspora Jewry found that 65 percent of respondents said they have relatives living outside of Israel.
The study, which was conducted by Keevoon Research, also revealed that a large majority of Israelis ? 69% ? believe it is important to visit Diaspora communities along with Jewish historical sites when traveling abroad for business or vacation. Only 24% said that visiting Diaspora communities and historical sites is "not important."
Clearly, then, the Israeli media are missing the boat.
A large portion of the Israeli public is connected to Diaspora Jewry both biologically and emotionally and is not averse to "sacrificing" part of their vacation time to learn more about it.
Moreover, Israelis frequently extend a helping hand to Jewish communities abroad, and both the government and the Jewish Agency have been increasing their allocations to strengthen and bolster Diaspora Jewish life and identity.
Israel even has a Diaspora Affairs Ministry, headed by Zionist hero Yuli Edelstein, which is charged with responsibility for cultivating closer ties.
Obviously the Israeli public does care about its fellow Jews overseas, so the media's lack of interest is as bewildering as it is unwarranted.
Even more worrisome, though, is the effect that the media's disregard is likely to have over time. By keeping Diaspora Jewry out of sight, the media are also keeping them out of mind.
Since the power of the press lies primarily in its ability to set the agenda, the fact that the Diaspora is never on its radar screen will inevitably create further distance between Israel and world Jewry.
The media play a critical role in educating the public about current events. Their failure to cover the Diaspora necessarily results in a dearth of knowledge and understanding on the part of many Israelis.
As a result, there is next to nothing in the way of public debate or discourse about Israel's policies and attitudes toward the Diaspora.
It is essential that steps be taken to correct this situation. There is no logical reason why the endlessly fascinating and fundamentally important goings-on among Jewish communities abroad should be so thoroughly overlooked.
The Israeli press needs to be encouraged to devote more attention to the Diaspora. Ultimately it is we, the consumers, that need to press them for more extensive coverage by demanding that more attention be paid to the subject.
Similarly, greater efforts must be made to teach about the contemporary Jewish experience in Israeli high schools and universities. Young Israelis need to be inculcated with a deeper appreciation for the unbreakable bond that unites Jews everywhere.
Our future as a nation is linked to the immutable relationship that exists between Israel and Jews abroad.
But unless we actively nurture our connection, learning more about one another, we run the risk of drifting apart. And that must not be allowed to happen.

What are you trying to convey with your underwater statues?
My work highlights the critical time we're living in, where we can influence the direction of our environment. I use sculpture to portray humans living in symbiosis with nature; to show how there is a sustainable future. But I'm also trying to show the negative impact we have, so some pieces highlight apathy and failure to act, or even to realise how bad the situation is.

Has your outlook changed?
I began with a very optimistic message: I was building this vast community of people working with the environment. Now, I've moved to the darker side. I created a guy sitting on a sofa with a hamburger, watching television, oblivious to his surroundings. That is a futuristic outlook, where we have ignored all the warnings and are sitting underwater but still fixated on something else.

What inspired these sculptures?
I was living in Grenada, in the Caribbean, where coral reefs were suffering as a result of tourism, and I was thinking of making installations but was conscious that I was just creating more objects. Then I thought of making artificial reefs. There was just one bay for snorkelling in Grenada and the impact was significant: you could see corals being kicked and broken, and anchors going directly down on the reef. The idea was to create a new attraction to draw people away. A lot of conservation is about leaving things alone. That's one of the biggest aims of the sculptures.

Can you describe the experience of swimming around the statues?
You're much more drawn in to your environment when you're underwater. You're forced into that world: having to breathe using compressed air or through a snorkel gives you a stronger connection to where you are and what you're doing. I feel more at peace there. The sculptures have a stronger impact underwater. Things change so quickly, they look ancient after six months.

Is photography an important part of your work?
Yes, because nothing stays the same. If I don't capture it at the right stage, two weeks later it'll be completely different. We've seen dramatic changes - and not always good ones - on The Silent Evolution, a work with 400 figures off the coast of Mexico, near Canc?n.

The area was a desolate sandy bed two years ago. I put the sculptures down in August 2010, and for six months it was incredible. Thousands of fish were migrating there, all sorts of crustaceans, hundreds of lobsters and lots of coralline algae were growing. And then, around March this year, the water temperature changed and algal blooms wiped out all that development. That has caused a lot of discussion among biologists over whether this is part of the process or a more serious underlying problem.

So, was it a natural event?
Opinions are divided. It's hard to get a definite answer out of scientists as to what may be causing it. We had had a particularly warm summer but I also think there are serious issues with water treatment facilities in Canc?n.

There's a giant lagoon on the inside of the hotel zone. The water quality is some of worst in the world - in some areas it's basically human waste - and that ends up going out to the reef. To protect the sculptures and make it easier to visit them, we put them where there wasn't so much current or wave action. But the downside is that they don't get a clean flow of open water in front of them.

What are you hoping to do with these sculptures next?
We're doing a new piece with a US marine biologist. I made casts of the ears of each child in a school class and turned them into a sculpture called The Listener. A group of biologists will fit a hydrophone inside it to analyse reef sounds and explore how to monitor reefs using audio only.

New York Times: College Football Is In Crisis, What With The Resume Padding And Child Rape And Things Like That [Journalismism]

New York Times: College Football Is In Crisis, What With The Resume Padding And Child Rape And Things Like ThatToday's New York Times writes up the resignation of Yale football coach Tom Williams, caught in a resume-padding scandal after he claimed to have been a former Rhodes Scholarship finalist. A two-bylined investigation by the Times in November, as Yale quarterback Patrick Witt was dropping out of the Rhodes process so he wouldn't miss the Harvard game, found no evidence that Williams had applied for a Rhodes at all. That prompted an internal inquiry at Yale, which led to Williams stepping down.

The Times rehashed the Rhodes investigation today, and added that further reporting had also contradicted Williams's claim that he had briefly been a non-playing free-agent addition to the San Francisco 49ers roster. "Caught in lies," the headline said. The text likewise called Williams's Rhodes story a "lie." (For comparison, in 2004, while debunking the Bush Administration's case that Iraq had an active nuclear-weapons program, the Newspaper of Record called the administration's claims "largely one-sided" and wrote that officials had failed to "convey the depth of evidence" contradicting them. )

Then the Times dropped back to put the whole Williams scandal in context:

Witt's story gained attention just as the child sexual abuse scandal fully engulfed Penn State. Jerry Sandusky, a longtime top assistant to Joe Paterno, had been charged with molesting young boys over many years. Paterno, who had failed to act aggressively when alerted years ago that Sandusky had been seen assaulting a child on Penn State property, was soon fired.

The Penn State scandal, at the time, was only the latest and worst in a series of embarrassments for college football programs. The University of Miami was placed under investigation this fall after it was reported that a convicted swindler had deeply infiltrated the football team, with cash and favors. Ohio State Coach Jim Tressel lost his job, in part for failing to report and later lying about a scandal involving his players.

Padding your resume?a football tradition going back to Vince Lombardi, at least?is the same kind of thing as raping children. Giving athletes cash and favors? Also like raping children. Free tattoos? Child rape. In case you were wondering what we mean when we talk about the toy morality of the people who cover college sports, there you have it.

Shell oil spill off Nigeria likely worst in decade (AP)

LAGOS, Nigeria ? The head of Nigeria's oil spill management agency says an offshore oil spill from a Royal Dutch Shell PLC field is likely the worst in a decade.

Peter Idabor of the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency told The Associated Press on Thursday that oil from the spill in Shell's Bonga field has spread to roughly 100 nautical miles. Idabor said he expects oil to begin washing ashore on Nigeria's southern coast later Thursday.

Shell announced Wednesday it had closed its Bonga field after a leak of less than 40,000 barrels of oil. That's about the amount of a 1998 Mobil spill that saw oil slicks extend down Nigeria's coast to Lagos.

(AP) ? The Senate voted Saturday to temporarily avert a Jan. 1 payroll tax increase and benefit cutoff for the long-time unemployed, but forcing a reluctant President Barack Obama to make an election-year choice between unions and environmentalists over whether to build an oil pipeline through the heart of the country.

With the still-reeling economy serving as a backdrop, the Senate's 89-10 vote belied a tortuous battle between Democrats and Republicans that produced the compromise two-month extension of the expiring tax breaks and jobless benefits and forestalled cuts in doctors' Medicare reimbursements.

It also capped a year of divided government marked by raucous partisan fights that tumbled to the brink of a first-ever U.S. default and three federal shutdowns, only to see eleventh-hour deals emerge. It also put the two sides on track to revisit the payroll tax cut early next year as the fights for control of the White House and Congress heat up.

However, House GOP leaders held a conference call Saturday with rank-and-file lawmakers in which participants said strong anger was expressed at the Senate for approving a bill that lasted just two months. No specific date was set for bringing the House back to town or for a vote, they said, injecting uncertainty into the next step.

"You can't have an economic recovery with this," said Rep. Jack Kingston, R-Ga., of the uncertainty he said the temporary bill would create. "If the Senate is incapable of doing that, we don't have to accept it."

A House GOP aide said afterward, "Members are overwhelmingly disappointed in the Senate's decision to just 'kick the can down the road' for two months. No announcement was made regarding the schedule or plans."

By 67-32, senators gave final congressional approval to a separate $1 trillion bill financing the Pentagon and scores of other federal agencies through next September. That measure avoided a shuttering of government offices that otherwise would have occurred this weekend when temporary financing expired.

The tax legislation delivers tax cuts and jobless benefits that some Republicans opposed. It also represents a rebuff of Obama's original demands for a yearlong payroll tax reduction for 160 million workers that was to be even deeper than this year's cut, extended to employers and paid for by boosting taxes on the highest-earning Americans.

The measure's $33 billion price tag will be paid for instead by raising fees that government-backed Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will charge to back new mortgages or refinancings, beginning next year. When fully phased in, those increases could cost a person with a $200,000 mortgage about $17 a month.

Despite the changes, Obama praised the Senate for passing the bill and prodded the Republican-run House to give it final approval in a vote, which has been expected early next week. He exhorted lawmakers to extend the tax cuts and jobless aid for the entire year, saying it would be "inexcusable" not to.

"It should be a formality, and hopefully it's done with as little drama as possible when they get back in January" from their holiday recess, he said.

The Senate adjourned for the year after its votes Saturday.

While Obama and Democrats used the fight to portray themselves as defenders of beleaguered middle- and lower-income people, Republicans used it to cast themselves as champions of job creation.

Headlining that was a provision they inserted forcing Obama to make a decision within two months on whether to allow construction of the proposed 1,700-mile Keystone XL pipeline, which is to deliver up to 700,000 barrels of oil daily from tar sands in Alberta, Canada, to refineries in Texas. The language requires him to issue the needed permit unless he declares the pipeline would not serve the national interest.

Unions have clamored for the thousands of jobs the project could create. Environmentalists have decried the huge amounts of energy it would take to extract the oil. Obama originally announced he was delaying a decision until 2013, which would have allowed him to avoid choosing between two Democratic constituencies before Election Day next November.

When the House inserted the language into its version of the payroll tax bill this month, Obama said he would "reject" the legislation if it retained the Keystone provision. He abandoned that stance this past week as GOP leaders said they would insist on keeping the Keystone language and the final deal jelled.

"The only thing standing between thousands of American workers and the good jobs this project will provide is a presidential decision," said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

An administration official said Friday that Obama would almost surely refuse to grant the permit, a stance echoed Saturday by congressional Democrats.

"We feel we're giving them the sleeves off a vest," said Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y.

Democrats said when Congress revisits the issue of renewing the tax cuts and jobless benefits early next year, they would win the political battle because they would be viewed as protecting peoples' household budgets.

Republicans, though, said they would once again focus the fight on jobs, with some predicting they would try adding provisions to repeal pollution curbs and other government regulations that they say make it harder for companies to hire people.

"There are lots of issues Republicans are interested in as job creators that will still be alive in March," said Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo.

The tax bill would renew this year's 4.2 percent payroll tax through February, preventing the rate from bouncing back to its normal 6.2 percent on New Year's Day. Obama pushed that cut through Congress a year ago as a way to help spark the economy by leaving more money in people's pockets.

A $50,000-a-year wage earner would save about $170 during next year's first two months under the bill the Senate approved Saturday.

Obama had proposed reducing the payroll tax employees pay to 3.1 percent next year. The levy is the chief source of revenue for Social Security.

For two more months, the tax measure would also continue current jobless benefits that provide a maximum 99 weeks of coverage for people who have been out of work the longest. Without any extension, the White House said, 2.5 million people would have lost coverage by the end of February.

The bill also prevents a 27 percent cut in Medicare reimbursements for doctors that might have induced some to stop treating the program's elderly beneficiaries.

The spending legislation carries out budget cuts across government that Republicans won earlier this year and includes GOP provisions blocking energy efficiency and coal dust requirements. Democrats fought off Republican language that would have blocked limits on greenhouse gases and hazardous emissions from utility plants and other sources.

More female managers do not reduce wage gap

ScienceDaily (Dec. 16, 2011) ? Are wage differences between men and women decreasing as more women attain managerial positions? A new Swedish report from the Institute for Labour Market Policy Evaluation (IFAU) and the Uppsala Center for Labor Studies (UCLS) at Uppsala University concludes that they are not. Manager gender is tied to neither wages nor, accordingly, wage differences on the labour market. Women held approximately 36 per cent of managerial positions within the Swedish employment market in 2008. That female managers are a minority is sometimes advanced as an explanation for the fact that women generally receive lower wages than men.

The wage gap between men and women, adjusted for age, experience, education and industry demographics, is approximately 8 per cent. A greater proportion of women in managerial positions could serve to reduce the wage gap if female managers set wages differently or, by serving as examples, encouraged a higher level of performance by women.

Earlier studies have shown that wage differences are smaller in industries and at workplaces with female managers. In her study, however, economist Lena Hensvik found no support for the claim that female managers entail any benefit for women in connection with wage setting. The study encompassed all of the public sector workplaces and a representative selection of private sector workplaces in Sweden during the years 1996-2008.

"At the first stage, I found that women with female managers receive higher salaries," she says. "But when I went further and considered individuals who had had both male and female managers and how salary varies with manager gender, I found no significant difference between working for a woman and working for a man. Any differences appear to be tied to the individuals, not their managers."

Having more female managers thus seems not to contribute to reducing the salary gap among employees.

"Earlier studies that found differences between workplaces with and without female managers should be interpreted with certain caution, since these studies did not take account of employee-pool composition differences," continues Lena Hensvik.

But do women employ more women? Lena Hensvik asserts that there is no evidence that they do. It may be that women employ more high-performing women, but even that appears to be bound up with the character of the workplace or industry, and not with the issue of whether the managers happen to be men or women.

11 Afghan police kidnapped by militants freed (AP)

KABUL, Afghanistan ? Eleven Afghan policemen kidnapped by militants nearly two weeks ago have been freed in northern Afghanistan.

The Afghan Defense Ministry says Afghan soldiers, border police and international troops rescued the policemen on Friday and arrested 25 opposition fighters.

The ministry said in a statement Saturday that when the militants ignored local elders' attempts to mediate the release of the captive policemen, the military intervened and rescued them. Authorities are still pursuing other militants suspected of being involved in the Dec. 5 kidnapping in Wardooj district of Badakhshan province.

Earlier, deputy provincial police chief Sayed Hussain Safawi said that two policemen were killed and four others were wounded in an ambush that preceded the kidnapping.

A roundup of 2011 global dairy research highlights the benefits of dairy products

Rosemont, IL -- As the New Year approaches, resolutions of losing weight and getting healthier are stacking up all over the world. However, with so many different fad diets, experts, websites and TV shows all touting different (and sometimes miraculous!) methods of how to maintain a healthy lifestyle, accomplishing your resolution can get quite confusing.

"These past few decades we've seen a dietary shift," said Donald Moore, Executive Director, Global Dairy Platform. "Consumers are too focused on what not to eat, instead of what to eat. Unfortunately, a popular diet taboo is to consume a product that has less of something like salt or fat, versus a product, such as milk, which is loaded with essential nutrients naturally designed to help you maintain a healthy lifestyle and potentially lose weight."

In 2011 alone, there has been an abundance of published research from world renowned nutritional scientists and universities, revealing the health benefits of dairy. To name a few:

  • According to a U.S. study published in February's Current Nutrition and Food Science, milk provides necessary nutrients without adversely impacting body weight in children and adolescents.
  • In Australia, researchers found that consumption of low-fat dairy may help decrease the risk for elevated blood pressure and, regardless of fat content, fluid dairy foods are associated with a reduced risk of elevated blood pressure.
  • A French study found a lower incidence of metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes and abnormal levels of fasting blood glucose was associated with higher consumption of dairy products and calcium.
  • Researchers in Sweden studied more than 15,000 women and found that high-fat diets (including yogurt and regular milk), are associated with a reduced risk of invasive breast cancer.
  • Researchers in Australia found that dairy food consumption are not associated with weight gain in children and adults. The review was published in the July Obesity Reviews.
  • In Canada, researchers found that women who consumed at least two servings of dairy per day had smaller visceral fat cells compared with women consuming less than two daily servings.
  • A May study revealed that dairy intake was not associated with increased heart attack risk in more than 3,000 Costa Rican adults.
  • A study of premenopausal African-American women revealed that consuming low-fat and fat-free dairy products may be associated with a lower percent of body fat.
  • A Swedish study found that a higher intake of dairy products is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.
  • In Japan, a breakfast that included milk protein was shown to reduce visceral fat by approximately 15%, versus a breakfast that included soy protein that showed no change in fat.
  • In October, a Danish study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that cheese does not seem to increase plasma total and LDL-cholesterol concentrations.

"For generations, the consumption of dairy has been a backbone of communities. Not only does it deliver nutrition to people at all stages of life, but dairy farming helps promote social, economic and environmental prosperity," said Moore.
