    Hi

I have a very large app built on my desktop. I want to continue working on it on my laptop. I tried out Team Server and uploaded the solution. I then download the solution to my laptop.

I cannot build it on my laptop. I get 75 errors for Resources is not a member of my

I also tried just directly copying the full folder from my desktop but its the same.

I have googled this for weeks and tried every suggestion on the net i can find.

Does anyone know where i start with this? What info can I give to help?

Typically the errors are good for people to know.. you know - see what is what directly from the horse's mouth versus an interpretation.

'Resources' is not a member of 'My'. F:\Programming\Personal Training\SDC\Sound Desk Ctrl\SoundDeskControl\SoundDeskControl\AboutBox1.Designer.vb 75 35 SoundDeskControl

Is the directory correct in both cases? In particular, are the paths identical between your main machine and the laptop? If not, are they logically equivalent? ie. at least the relative paths should be the same, or point to actual instances of the .Designer.vb files.

Within the .Designer.vb file, there should be a line similar (but obviously not the same as):

 Me.PBsource7.BackgroundImage = Global.WindowsApplication1.My.Resources.Resources.Pic7

Create In-A-Pinch Pinhole Reading Glasses with Your Fingers

Create In-A-Pinch Pinhole Reading Glasses with Your FingersIf you're caught without your reading glasses, or you encounter some terrifically fine print on a box or contract, you have two options: curse your abnormal retina design, or pinch your fingers together. It's like adjusting the f-stop on your eyeballs.

Instructables poster mikey77 shows us how it's done, using three fingers?the thumb joined up against an index finger, with a middle finger forming the base?to create a small hole through which to see tiny things more clearly. It's obviously not for lengthy reading, but it can help in a ... pinch (sorry). Here's how it works:

You are effectively creating a pinhole lens. This gives a slight magnification and significantly increases your depth of field (the range that is in focus). It does this by greatly limiting the amount of light going through the lens in your eye. It is like adjusting the F stop in a camera.

Tried this out? Got another last-ditch reading and vision tip?

NKorea orders rocket prep after US B-2 drill

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? North Korean leader Kim Jong Un warned Friday that his rocket forces were ready "to settle accounts with the U.S.," unleashing a new round of bellicose rhetoric after U.S. nuclear-capable B-2 bombers dropped dummy munitions in joint military drills with South Korea.

Kim's warning, and the litany of threats that have preceded it, don't indicate an imminent war. In fact, they're most likely meant to coerce South Korea into softening its policies, win direct talks and aid from Washington, and strengthen the young leader's credentials and image at home.

But the threats from North Korea and rising animosity from the rivals that have followed U.N. sanctions over Pyongyang's Feb. 12 nuclear test do raise worries of a misjudgment leading to a clash.

Kim "convened an urgent operation meeting" of senior generals just after midnight, signed a rocket preparation plan and ordered his forces on standby to strike the U.S. mainland, South Korea, Guam and Hawaii, state media reported.

Kim said "the time has come to settle accounts with the U.S. imperialists in view of the prevailing situation," according to a report by the North's official Korean Central News Agency.

Later Friday at the main square in Pyongyang, tens of thousands of North Koreans turned out for a 90-minute mass rally in support of Kim's call to arms. Men and women, many of them in olive drab uniforms, stood in arrow-straight lines, fists raised as they chanted, "Death to the U.S. imperialists." Placards in the plaza bore harsh words for South Korea as well, including, "Let's rip the puppet traitors to death!"

Small North Korean warships, including patrol boats, conducted maritime drills off both coasts of North Korea near the border with South Korea on Thursday, South Korean Defense Ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok said in a briefing Friday. He didn't provide more details.

The spokesman said that South Korea's military was mindful of the possibility that North Korean drills could lead to an actual provocation. He also said that the South Korean and U.S. militaries are watching closely for any signs of missile launch preparations in North Korea. He didn't elaborate.

North Korea, which says it considers the U.S.-South Korean military drills preparations for invasion, has pumped out a string of threats in state media. In the most dramatic case, Pyongyang made the highly improbable vow to nuke the United States.

On Friday, state media released a photo of Kim and his senior generals huddled in front of a map showing routes for envisioned strikes against cities on both American coasts. The map bore the title "U.S. Mainland Strike Plan."

Portions of the photo appeared to be manipulated, though an intriguing detail ? a bandage on Kim's left arm ? appeared to be real.

Experts believe the country is years away from developing nuclear-tipped missiles that could strike the United States. Many say they've also seen no evidence that Pyongyang has long-range missiles that can hit the U.S. mainland.

Still, there are fears of a localized conflict, such as a naval skirmish in disputed Yellow Sea waters. Such naval clashes have happened three times since 1999. There's also the danger that such a clash could escalate. Seoul has vowed to hit back hard the next time it is attacked.

North Korea's threats are also worrisome because of its arsenal of short- and mid-range missiles that can hit targets in South Korea and Japan. Seoul is only a short drive from the heavily armed border separating the Koreas.

"The North can fire 500,000 rounds of artillery on Seoul in the first hour of a conflict," analysts Victor Cha and David Kang wrote recently for Foreign Policy magazine. They also note that North Korea has a history of testing new South Korean leaders; President Park Geun-hye took office late last month. "Since 1992, the North has welcomed these five new leaders by disturbing the peace," they wrote.

U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel told reporters Thursday that the decision to send B-2 bombers to join the military drills was part of normal exercises and not intended to provoke North Korea. Hagel acknowledged, however, that North Korea's belligerent tones and actions in recent weeks have ratcheted up the danger in the region, "and we have to understand that reality."

U.S. Forces Korea said the B-2 stealth bombers flew from a U.S. air base in Missouri and dropped dummy munitions on an uninhabited South Korean island range on Thursday before returning home. The Pentagon said this was the first time a B-2 had dropped dummy munitions over South Korea, and later added that it was unclear whether there had ever been any B-2 flights there at all.

The statement follows an earlier U.S. announcement that nuclear-capable B-52 bombers participated in the joint military drills.

Pyongyang uses the U.S. nuclear arsenal as a justification for its own push for nuclear weapons. It claims that U.S. nuclear firepower is a threat to its existence and provocation.

The two Missouri-based stealth bombers used in the South Korean drills probably weren't nuclear-armed, but experts say they're the aircraft that would likely be sent if Washington ever decides it does want to drop nuclear bombs on North Korea. The United States doesn't forward-deploy nuclear weapons in South Korea, Okinawa, Guam or Hawaii.

"The B-2 can reach targets from North Korea to Iran directly from Missouri, which is what the United States did in the early stages of operations against Yugoslavia, Afghanistan and Iraq," analyst Jeffrey Lewis wrote in a post on ArmsControlWonk.com earlier this month.

Betrayal | New Writing | Granta Magazine

    1983, dir: David Jones.
Adaptation of Harold Pinter?s play of the same name.

The film starts in silence. Couples are leaving a party at a smart London address, exiting the white building, passing beyond the black railings into the night. The camera approaches from across the street and hovers at the front window, looking in. The host couple are tidying up and arguing more and more fiercely. The woman slaps the man. The man slaps the woman. A sleepy child, woken presumably by their voices, enters and is comforted, briskly, unconvincingly by the woman who is still angry, whose cheek is stinging.

Time runs backward from this tableau of final predicament and the people speak. There are three of them, three actors: Jeremy Irons, Patricia Hodge and Ben Kingsley. The characters have names, of course, but I?ll refer to them by the names of the actors because they are famous, virtuoso, and, in keeping with the piece, the actors do not entirely disappear into their parts. We see their choices, Adultery, Nabokov said, is a very commonplace way of rising above the commonplace.their thinking. As is the way with Pinter?s dialogue, there is a distance between them and what they are saying. Words are advanced, repeated, considered. They are used to persecute, cajole, remind, comfort, insult, seduce and deceive. When the actors are not speaking they are each alone. Jeremy Irons is nervous, vulnerable, unstable, his gaze flickering. Patricia Hodge is very composed, lost inside herself, her surface as smooth and sad as graveyard sculpture. Ben Kinglsey is angry, peremptory, mocking, his dark eyes hard and bright. It is he who has been betrayed. His wife, Patricia Hodge, has had a long affair with his best friend, Jeremy Irons, and he has known about this for a long time, much longer than Jeremy Irons thinks he has. It is this knowledge, perhaps, (this and his own history of extra-marital affairs, freely admitted to, not explored), that give him his gleam of amused and aggressive self-possession.

Adultery, Nabokov said, is a very commonplace way of rising above the commonplace. Pinter?s reverse chronology is what makes this ordinary story engrossing. We watch the damage being undone in stages, the characters getting younger, fresher, until finally we?re at the moment after which everything goes wrong, or rather, for the viewer, the moment before which everything has already gone wrong. The grim future has happened in the past. I wonder if there?s something palliative about this structure, something absolving. Pinter himself was a betrayer, the play apparently arose from his own long affair with Joan Bakewell. His play makes the future irrevocable all along. Ascribing guilt at the moment of initiation is beside the point. Nevertheless it is with this scene of inception that the film climaxes. Our final scrutiny is given to Jeremy Irons declaring his love to Patricia Hodge upstairs at a party. The scene is uncomfortable and in a several ways, dissatisfying. Is desire, is emotion enough of a reason to instigate all this pain?

    You?re beautiful. I?ve been watching you all night . . . You?re incredible.
    You?re drunk.
    Nevertheless.

Why is this happening? There seems so little reason for it. Jeremy Irons? speeches are so excessive and unoriginal. Pinter exposes this, yoking dead language to live feeling:

You?re lovely. I?m crazy about you. All these lines I?m saying, don?t you see they?ve never been said before. I?m crazy about you.

Patricia Hodge watches his weird transport as we do, wondering, unsure.

    I?m lost. You?re wonderful.
    No.
    Yes.

As exhilarated as Jeremy Irons is, however triumphantly he finally grasps and kisses Patricia Hodge, we are in a bleak place. This is delusional love as Freud dispraises it in ?Being In Love And Hypnosis?, the ?sexual over-estimation? We love and injure ourselves and others all the time. of the loved object that annihilates the lover?s ego. (Jeremy Irons is here in complete contrast to Ben Kingsley?s smiling, desolate wholeness, the man who doesn?t love). According to Freud, ?traits of humility . . . and self-injury occur in every case of being in love.? Jeremy Irons? first betrayal is of himself, this self-injury that spreads out to hurt others. But he can?t help it. None of us can. We love and injure ourselves and others all the time. The thrill of this film ? and it is thrilling ? is seeing that understood and played out by actors of incredible skill. It is adult and unconsoling and beautifully wrought. ?

(AP) ? Cody Zeller refused to bask in the glory of an outright Big Ten title the Indiana Hoosiers probably wouldn't have won without him.

"It was a team win," Zeller said.

    Technically, that's true.

Zeller didn't single-handedly beat No. 7 Michigan on Sunday, it just seemed that way for stretches of the game ? and in particular the final minute of the Hoosiers' 72-71 victory.

He made two shots ? including a go-ahead layup with 13 seconds left ? and a pair of free throws on one end of the court and altered Trey Burke's shot at the other basket in the last 38 seconds of the game.

The 7-foot, sophomore center stole the show after being relatively overlooked in the buildup to a game that featured Burke and the Hoosiers' Victor Oladipo, who are both Big Ten and national player of the year candidates.

"That is one of the best players that is ever going to come through Indiana," Hoosiers coach Tom Crean said.

In Indiana's regular-season finale, he played to his potential.

Zeller had a season-high 25 points, one short of his career high, 10 rebounds, two assists, a block and a victory-sealing defensive play in the lane against Burke that didn't show up in the box score.

"I've been saying all year long, he should be the player of the year," Oladipo said after scoring 14 points on 7-of-18 shooting and grabbing a career-high 13 rebounds. "If you don't give it to him, something's wrong with y'all."

After falling out of bounds on the final sequence, Zeller stood up quickly and got in bounds, giving teammate Christian Watford someone to throw the ball to as he saved it from going out of bounds.

"We've been working on that all year ? closing out games," Zeller said.

The Hoosiers (26-5, 14-4 Big Ten) trailed by five in the final minute but took advantage when the Wolverines (25-6, 12-6) were unable to close it out at the foul line or in the lane, costing themselves a piece of the Big Ten title.

Jordan Morgan had a fairly easy tip-in attempt of Burke's miss that could have won it for Michigan, but the ball rolled tantalizingly around the rim and off.

"It just hung there," Burke said.

Watford got to the rebound ? Indiana had 23 more boards than Michigan ?and threw it back in bounds to Zeller.

"Christian made a great play at the end that people might not realize, saving the ball to Cody," Hoosiers guard Jordan Hulls said.

A couple of Michigan's rivals surely wish the Wolverines had won.

Ohio State, which beat Illinois on Sunday, needed an Indiana loss to earn a share of the conference championship. Michigan State was in the same position before defeating Northwestern later in the day.

"Indiana has been the best team all year," Spartans coach Tom Izzo said Sunday night. "They probably deserved to win the Big Ten championship."

The Hoosiers had already clinched a share of the title, for the first time since 2002, but needed another victory to finish alone atop the conference for the first time since 1993.

"In retrospect, that'll be good and that'll sink in," Crean said.

Indiana's 26th victory, and the fact that it withstood test after test in the highly competitive Big Ten, might have earned the Hoosiers a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. They will be the top-seeded team at this week's Big Ten tournament in Chicago.

"We're not done yet," Hulls said.

The Wolverines blew a chance to win a share of the Big Ten title for a second straight year for the first time since the 1985 and 1986 seasons.

"This really hurts," Burke acknowledged. "This was for a championship."

Morgan made a tiebreaking putback with 1:35 left, teammate Tim Hardaway followed with a layup on the Wolverines' next possession and Glen Robinson III made the first of two free throws with 52 seconds to go to give the Wolverines a 71-66 lead.

After Zeller made a shot on the ensuing possession, Hardaway missed the front end of a 1-and-1. Zeller then connected on two free throws and Burke couldn't convert at the line, missing the front end of another haunting 1-and-1.

"This game wasn't blown on the free throw line," Michigan coach John Beilein insisted. "Those two are our leaders, and they've won a lot of games for us. We're never going to put this on them."

Michigan led by as many as 11 points ? matching the biggest lead any team has had against the Hoosiers ? and looked as though it was going to be on the winning end of a closely contested game until it simply could not make key free throws or stop Zeller.

"Cody has a tremendous temperament and tenacity to him," Crean said.

(AP Photo/Kathy Willens)

(AP) ? Mariano Rivera and his family walked into the pavilion behind the third-base stands at Steinbrenner Field followed by his New York Yankees' teammates.

It was the start of the long goodbye for baseball's greatest closer.

Dressed in a dark jersey top and pinstriped uniform pants, Rivera announced what already had leaked out in prior days: This will be his 19th and final major league season.

And the 43-year-old has a clear vision of how he wants his career to end.

"The last game I hope will be throwing the last pitch in the World Series," he said. "Winning the World Series, that would be my ambition."

Rivera said he made the decision before arriving at spring training. With the entire Yankees' team looking on ? including longtime teammates Derek Jeter and Andy Pettitte ? Rivera said he knew the time was right for his decision. Rivera sat a table and team officials, led by managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner and manager Joe Girardi, sat nearby.

"I have just a few bullets left," he said.

He then made his first game appearance since April 30, throwing 15 pitches during a 1-2-3 fifth inning against Atlanta. Looking like his overpowering self of old, Rivera retired Dan Uggla on a popup to second, then threw called third strikes past Juan Francisco and Chris Johnson.

"It was great to be on the mound again," Rivera said with a big smile.

Rivera jogged onto the field from the right-field bullpen to a standing ovation as Metallica's "Enter Sandman" was played, then left the mound to another loud ovation. He called the whole day "overwhelming."

"It's wonderful," Rivera said. "I can't ask for more than that."

With a dominating cut fastball few batters have figured out, Rivera holds the career saves record with 608 and has helped the Yankees win five World Series titles. He combined with Jeter, Pettitte and Jorge Posada to form the Yankees' Core Four.

"We just have a special relationship," Pettitte said. "I don't know how to explain it. Obviously, when you spent as much time together after as many years as we've been together, you just kind of grow a little closer to one another than you would with other teammates. He's always been there for me."

Rivera briefly spent time with Pettitte and Jeter following the news conference, then headed toward the back field next to the pavilion to work out with the other pitchers.

"What almost got me was seeing the whole team there," Rivera said. "I was like, 'Wow!' It was great that Joe allowed it."

Jeter said it's great that Rivera has "come to peace with what he wants to do."

"Now he can enjoy this season," the Yankees captain said. "I think it's going to be a special year for him. I'm happy for him. He's made this decision, and it's the best one for him and his family."

Rivera missed most of last year after tearing his right knee while shagging flyballs during batting practice in early May. Rivera said he would have retired at the end of last season if he had not gotten hurt.

"I didn't want to leave like that," he said. "I felt like I wanted to give everything."

Rivera also said he wanted to give Yankees fans around the major leagues a chance to see him one more time, knowing this will be the end.

"I'm actually appreciative that we get to enjoy him for one more year," Girardi said. "I think he's prepared to go 100 percent. I think he'll have a good year. It's been a real treat for me. I was relaxed when he came into the game as a catcher, and I'm relaxed when he comes into the game as a manager, so that's probably about the highest compliment you can pay a closer."

Rivera's wife and two children were by his side for the news conference. He began by playfully thanking the Yankees for giving him a new contract for two additional years through 2015 ? which would break a team policy of not negotiating new deals before the old ones expire.

"It's not too easy when you come to a decision like this," Rivera said, turning serious. "After this year, I will be retired. ... Now you're hearing it from me. It's official now."

While others have proclaimed him the best closer in baseball history, Rivera wouldn't put that label on himself.

"I don't feel myself, the greatest of all time. I'm a team player," he said. "I would love to be remembered as a player who was always there for others."

Yankees general Brian Cashman said he knew Rivera's intention was to retire last season.

"He's irreplaceable," Cashman said. "He is the greatest of all-time. I've known him since he was in the minor leagues, and he's never changed once. You see a lot of players that get a lot of money, become famous and change over time. He hasn't changed a bit. I've got more respect for him as a player and person because of that."

Hall of Fame reliever Goose Gossage, a Yankees' guest instructor, called Rivera "not only a great pitcher, but as great a person." Gossage noted that the role of closer has gone from multiple innings to basically a one-inning job.

"Mo is as good as anybody that's ever done it," Gossage said. "The last thing I want to do is take anything away from this guy, he is great. But I would throw out the challenge that, do what we did and we'll compare apples to apples. We didn't get to pitch just one inning, but I believe today is the way they should be used."

Former Yankees catcher Jorge Posada said there is only one Mariano Rivera.

"There won't be another person who will come along and do what he did," Posada said in a statement. "I'm so happy he is going out on his terms. Now every time he steps into a ballpark this year, teams and fans can celebrate and appreciate what he has meant to this great game we play."

Rivera said he will miss being on the field but not the long travel and many nights in hotels. He will be the last player to wear No. 42 ? retired for Jackie Robinson by Major League Baseball in 1997 but allowed to remain for players using it at the time.

"Being the last player to wear No. 42 is a privilege," he said.

Rivera has not pitched in an exhibition game this spring training. He usually goes at his own pace in camp, working in the bullpen and throwing in simulated games ? while avoiding bus trips to opponents' spring ballparks.

The 12-time All-Star has earned a record 42 saves in the postseason while putting up an 0.70 ERA. He began his big league career in 1995 and has spent his entire time with the Yankees.

Rivera made just nine appearances last season before he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee on May 3, and he had surgery on June 12. Rivera returned to his native Panama earlier this week on a personal matter.

The Rivera era with the Yankees almost got derailed during spring training 1996, when some in the organization were not happy with the play of Jeter, then a rookie, at shortstop. After an injury to veteran Tony Fernandez, Yankees owner George Steinbrenner held meetings to consider trading Rivera to Seattle for veteran shortstop Felix Fermin.

"The Boss was honestly considering it, and forced us to have some serious conversions about it" Cashman said. "It was a fight to convince the Boss to stand down and not force us to do a deal. Thankfully we didn't do that deal, the Boss listened, backed down, made us go through the fire drill, and that was as close as we ever came to trading Mariano."

As for the future, Rivera wants to take time off after this season to spend with his family. He envisions himself working in baseball, perhaps with minor leaguers.

"I definitely will be involved in the game some way, some aspect of the game," he said.

Rivera maintained his announcement was a cause for celebration and should not be a worry for the Yankees, who have come to regard him as a constant.

"There's nothing to be sad," Rivera said. "I did everything within my power to enjoy the game, to do it well, to respect the game of baseball. Have so much joy, and no one can take that joy away from me."

Scientists Make Plans To Blast Threatening Asteroids

The recent meteor blast in Russian has brought renewed public attention to the risk posed by meteors on a collision course with the earth. It's a risk Dr. Andrew Cheng of the John Hopkins Applied Physics Lab is working to avert. In a joint venture with NASA and the European Space Agency, Cheng is heading up a plan to develop a rocket that could collide with an asteroid and knock it off course. He talks about it with Weekends on All Things Considered host Jacki Lyden.

MIAMI (Reuters) - Tiger Woods's sharp putting helped him to a share of the five-way lead at the WGC-Cadillac Championship on Thursday after he got lessons on the practice green from one of his opponents. Woods worked with Steve Stricker, one of the game's best putters, for over an hour on Wednesday and it clearly worked as he shot a six-under 66 at Doral, with just 23 putts in his round, including a 38-footer for birdie on the fourth hole. "Whatever he says, I'm going to do. He's one of the best putters that's ever lived," Woods said after his round. ...

Study sheds light on role of climate in influenza transmission

    Saturday, March 9, 2013

Two types of environmental conditions?cold-dry and humid-rainy?are associated with seasonal influenza epidemics, according to an epidemiological study led by researchers at the National Institutes of Health's Fogarty International Center. The paper, published in PLOS Pathogens, presents a simple climate-based model that maps influenza activity globally and accounts for the diverse range of seasonal patterns observed across temperate, subtropical and tropical regions.

The findings could be used to improve existing current influenza transmission models, and could help target surveillance efforts and optimize the timing of seasonal vaccine delivery, according to Fogarty researcher Cecile Viboud, Ph.D., who headed the study. "The model could have a broader application, encouraging researchers to analyze the association between climatic patterns and infectious disease across a wide range of diseases and latitudes," said Viboud.

Human influenza infections exhibit a strong seasonal cycle in temperate regions, and laboratory experiments suggest that low specific humidity facilitates the airborne survival and transmission of the virus in temperate regions. Specific humidity is the ratio of water vapor to dry air in a particular body of air while relative humidity?commonly used in weather forecasts?is the amount of water vapor in the air relative to its capacity to hold water vapor, and is primarily a function of temperature.

Data from animal studies indicate low temperature and humidity increase the duration of the virus's reproduction and expulsion in infected organisms and virus stability in the environment, increasing the probability of transmission through coughing, sneezing or breathing. In contrast, high temperature seems to block airborne transmission.

According to James Tamerius, Ph.D., a geographer at Columbia University, New York City, and the first author of the study, the effect of low specific humidity on influenza could cause annual winter epidemics in temperate areas. "However, this relationship is unlikely to account for the epidemiology of influenza in tropical and subtropical regions where epidemics often occur during the rainy season or transmit year-round without a well-defined season," he said.

After assessing the role of local climatic variables on virus seasonality in a global sample of study sites, Viboud and her colleagues found that temperature and specific humidity were the best individual predictors of the months of maximum influenza activity, known as influenza peaks. The team discovered that in temperate regions, influenza was more common one month after periods of minimum specific humidity. These periods happen to coincide with months of lowest temperature. In contrast, sites that maintained high levels of specific humidity and temperature were generally characterized by influenza epidemics during the most humid and rainy months of the year. "The models we used predicted the timing of peak influenza activity with 75 to 87 percent accuracy," said Viboud.

"Anecdotal evidence suggests that colder climates have winter flu while warmer climates that experience major fluctuations in precipitation have flu epidemics during the rainy season, and the current study fits that pattern," said Viboud. "In contrast, the seasonality of influenza is less well-defined in locations with little variation in temperature and precipitation, and is a pattern that remains poorly understood. One hypothesis that is often used to explain tropical influenza activity is that people congregate indoors more frequently during the rainy season, increasing contact rates and disease transmission. There is little data to confirm this, however, and it's an interesting area for future research."

To reach these conclusions, the researchers used a recently developed global database that provides information on influenza peaks from 1975-2008 for 78 sites worldwide. The study spanned a range of latitude that was between 1 and 60 degrees, with 39 percent of the sites located in the tropics. Additionally, epidemiological data from nine countries participating in FluNet, the World Health Organization's global influenza surveillance program, was used to ensure independent validation. The nine countries?including Spain, Tunisia, Senegal, Philippines, Vietnam, Colombia, Paraguay, South Africa and Argentina? were not represented in the original 78-location database and were chosen because each country provided several years of data.

"We've shown the importance of thresholds in humidity and temperature which are predictive of whether influenza activity occurs during winter months, the rainy season or throughout the year," said Viboud. "The predictions of our climate-based models compared favorably to epidemiological information collected independently of the dataset used for the model-building exercise."

Though the study offers researchers a new tool in the global effort to track the spread of influenza, climate is only one of several potential drivers of influenza seasonality. "Further work should focus on examining the role of population travel and other factors in influenza transmission," notes Mark Miller, M.D., director of Fogarty's Division of International Epidemiology and Population Studies. "

More broadly, additional analysis of the link between climate and infectious diseases is needed? particularly for respiratory and intestinal pathogens that display marked seasonality." The authors conclude, "A better understanding of the environmental, demographic and social drivers of infectious disease seasonality is crucial for improving transmission models and optimizing interventions."

Arizona House passes anti-federal education bill

PHOENIX (AP) -- Dozens of public schools would be able to throw out federal education policy regulating academic standards, teacher evaluation requirements and student tracking systems under a measure approved by the Arizona House on Thursday.

The Republican-led House voted 36-23 along party lines to advance the measure to the Senate after heated debate over the value of federal education dollars.

The proposed law would allow roughly 130 district and charter schools that don't receive federal money to ignore federal and state mandates. The exempted schools would still need to follow any health, safety, civil rights and insurance mandates.

Republican Rep. Eddie Farnsworth, the bill's sponsor, said schools that don't benefit from federal dollars shouldn't be forced to meet federal standards. Farnsworth is president of the Benjamin Franklin Charter School in Gilbert.

"It simply says, 'Yes, we as a state have a right to decide what we are going to do on education,'" he said.

Critics fretted that if the measure becomes law, it would result in a significant hit to Arizona's education budget. Federal education funding is generally linked to compliance and income.

"When we exempt these few schools from complying with federal regulations, all of our schools in the state are at risk for losing federal funding," said Democratic Rep. Eric Meyer.

Farnsworth countered that Arizona lawmakers need to support good policy over federal threats. He said federal education funding and regulations are unconstitutional.

"When you talk about the federal government, I have no idea what they are going to do. ... Anytime I try to do anything, that's what I hear: 'We are going to lose federal funding, we are going to lose federal funding,'" Farnsworth said. "There's really not a lot of risk, but if it does happen then at some point, we have to say, 'This is the best policy for our state, and we will defend it if we need to.'"

Republican Rep. Justin Pierce also urged lawmakers to ignore the Democrats' fiscal warnings.

"It's a bit of a red herring when we ask people whether something is possible or not," he said. "Anything that is not impossible is possible."

SAS airline three-month loss down to $100 million

STOCKHOLM (AP) ? Scandinavian airline group SAS says it narrowed its net loss in the November-January period to 630 million kronor ($100 million) from 2.5 billion kronor a year earlier, mainly through cost cuts.

Revenue in the period was up to 9.6 billion kronor from 9.3 billion kronor as overall traffic grew 4.3 percent.

Facing stiff competition from budget airlines and high expenses, SAS AB in November embarked on a wide restructuring plan to streamline operations and announced 800 job cuts aimed at saving 3 billion kronor annually.

CEO Rickard Gustafson said Friday he was not satisfied with the performance but was upbeat about 2013, saying SAS is committed to completing its action plan. Its aim to achieve positive income before tax for the full-year "remains firmly in place."

Fliers call knives-on-planes policy 'common sense'

Airline passengers will be able to carry small knives, souvenir baseball bats, golf clubs and other sports equipment onto planes beginning in April 2013 under a policy change announced Tuesday, March 5, 2013, by the head of the Transportation Security Administration administrator John Pistole. (AP Photo/Gene Blythe, File)

(AP) ? Passengers reacted with shrugs but largely agreed with a new policy announced by the Transportation Security Administration that airline passengers will be able to carry small knives and previously forbidden sports equipment on planes.

"It's common sense," said Pat O'Brien, who stood at Los Angeles International Airport after arriving from Durango, Colo. "You can make anything into a knife so I don't have a problem with it at all. You can sharpen a credit card to make a sharp implement."

Aviation security consultant John L. Sullivan agreed with O'Brien, saying a pen or toothbrush can be sharpened like the "shivs" inmates sometimes make in prison.

"There are a lot of things you can use on an airplane if you are intent on hurting someone," said Sullivan, co-founder of the Welsh-Sullivan Group in Dallas. "Security is never 100 percent."

The changes announced by the TSA Tuesday take effect April 25. Box cutters, razor blades and knives that don't fold or that have molded grip handles will still be prohibited.

The new policy also allows for souvenir baseball bats, golf clubs and other sports equipment to be carried on instead of checked, a move that brought a thumbs up from Dean Rhymer, who plays club hockey for the Junior Los Angeles Kings and strode into the terminal at LAX carrying his hockey stick.

"I think it'll be helpful," Rhymer said. "It's easier to carry it on to bring it places."

Sullivan, speaking as a passenger not a consultant, worried more about the sporting goods than the small knives, saying the "last thing I need is someone getting on a plane taking up valuable space with their pool cues and hockey sticks."

The new policy conforms U.S. security standards to international standards, and allows TSA to concentrate its energies on more serious safety threats, the agency said in a statement.

The announcement, made by TSA Administrator John Pistole at an airline industry gathering in New York, drew an immediate outcry from unions representing flight attendants and other airline workers, who said the items are still dangerous in the hands of the wrong passengers.

Transport Workers Union Local 556, which represents over 10,000 flight attendants at Southwest Airlines, called the new policy "dangerous" and "shortsighted," saying it was designed to make "the lives of TSA staff easier, but not make flights safer."

"While we agree that a passenger wielding a small knife or swinging a golf club or hockey stick poses less of a threat to the pilot locked in the cockpit, these are real threats to passengers and flight attendants in the passenger cabin," the union said in a statement.

The new policy permits folding knives with blades that are 2.36 inches or less in length and are less than 1/2-inch wide. The policy is aimed at allowing passengers to carry pen knives, corkscrews with small blades and other knives.

Passengers will also be allowed to bring onboard as part of their carry-on luggage novelty-sized baseball bats less than 24 inches long, toy plastic bats, billiard cues, ski poles, hockey sticks, lacrosse sticks and two golf clubs, the agency said. The policy goes into effect on April 25.

Security standards adopted by the International Civil Aviation Organization, a U.N. agency, already call for passengers to be able to carry those items. Those standards are non-binding, but many countries follow them.

There has been a gradual easing of some of the security measures applied to airline passengers after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

In 2005, the TSA changed its policies to allow passengers to carry on airplanes small scissors, knitting needles, tweezers, nail clippers and up to four books of matches. The move came as the agency turned its focus toward keeping explosives off planes, because intelligence officials believed that was the greatest threat to commercial aviation.

And in September 2011, the TSA no longer required children 12 years old and under to remove their shoes at airport checkpoints. The agency recently issued new guidelines for travelers 75 years old and older so they can avoid removing shoes and light jackets when they go through airport security checkpoints.
