SEATTLE (AP) ? A gunman opened fire at a Seattle cafe on Wednesday, killing two people, critically wounding three others and setting off a manhunt that forced officials to close nearby schools.
Police searching for the suspect also had to respond to another fatal shooting near the city's downtown. They say a man killed a woman in an apparent carjacking and fled in a black SUV.
Authorities didn't immediately know whether the shootings were related.
The latest spasm of deadly gun violence to hit the city in recent weeks has worried Seattle's leaders and prompted police to consider increasing patrols in high-crime areas.
Gunfire erupted late Wednesday morning at Cafe Racer, a restaurant and music venue north of the University of Washington. The gunman was described as a man in his 30s wearing dark clothes.
Evan Hill, who lives above the building where the cafe shooting happened, said the cafe was an artists' collective and performance space.
"It's the strangest place to think of a shooting," said Hill, who heard four to five shots. He said he ran to his balcony and called 911, but didn't see a suspect.
Nearby Roosevelt High School has been locked down during the manhunt. Seattle School District spokeswoman Teresa Wippel said students also are locked inside Eckstein Middle School and Greenlake Elementary.
Harborview Medical Center spokeswoman Susan Gregg said all three wounded from the University District shooting are in critical condition.
In the second shooting, the SUV that the gunman fled in was later found, but the suspect remained at large, police said.
In the last month, there have been two random killings in the city.
Last week, a man died when a stray bullet struck him as he and his family drove down a Seattle street. In late April, a woman died of injuries suffered in an apparently random drive-by shooting near downtown.
No arrests have been made in either of those fatalities.
On Saturday, a bystander was wounded near the iconic Space Needle when he was struck by a bullet allegedly fired by a gang member involved in a dispute with another man, authorities said.
In addition to the plan to increase the number of officers on patrol in high-crime areas, police are also urging people with information about shootings to come forward.
Some city leaders were skeptical those approaches would work.
"We have seen many community vigils, community mobilizations. We've heard about these strategies before," said Councilman Tom Rasmussen. "What's going to change?"

Finding a Phishing Hole
I didn't realize just how hard it would be to set up the pool of users to participate in the test. Businesses planning on running PhishGuru will need to work very closely with IT before attempting the project. It is not something that can be done on the fly, especially if there are spam filters and other Email security products already in place.
My original plan was to pull together a list of my PCMag Labs colleagues to test the service (and their phish smarts!). Wombat said I would need to whitelist the domain that would be sending the simulated messages within Postini, which we use for our mail security. It turns out our in-house setup uses a lot of custom rules along with Postini's filters, so setting up this test would have required our IT team to manually tweak settings on each account being tested.
Our IT head honcho had some post-test concerns, as well. What if the people in the test forgot the simulation was finished and clicked on a "real" malicious message, thinking it was one of the PhishGuru tests? IT would have to deal with the cleanup.
Wombat assured me that it was possible to test across multiple domains, so we toyed with the idea of using personal email addresses, like the ones on Gmail, Hotmail, and Yahoo! Mail. However, I was concerned the test messages may get trapped by the spam filters on various Webmail services.
In the end, I wound up setting up a basic mail server by installing Postfix on an Amazon EC2 instance and created ten user accounts.
Baiting the Hook
The simulations are called "campaigns" in the PhishGuru world and are created using an online management portal. A new customer signs up for PhishGuru online or by contacting Wombat directly. The company currently offers a free simulation campaign, which is one email template sent to a group of users for one day. For the purpose of this review, I worked with Wombat to set up multiple campaigns over the space of one week.
After I received my account information, I logged into the management portal at phishguru.com and had the option to "Create New Campaign." At this point, I could create my test pool by uploading a comma-delimited file containing names, email addresses, and the name of the department for each test account. PhishGuru automatically created groups based on the email address, allowing me to keep track of results by group. An administrator could tell, for example, if the HR group was doing better or worse than Marketing in detecting phishing mail.
I went through the five-step process, deciding the users who should receive the phishing emails, selecting the type of email I would like to use, picking an email template and customizing it, choosing and customizing the training material to display, and scheduling when the messages will be sent. Once the campaign is created, a "test" message is sent to the administrator's account to verify it looks correct. I clicked on a confirmation link in the test mail to verify the test message.

A bit of a mobile software bombshell dropped overnight with news that some key members of HP's newly open-sourced Enyo team moving to Google, The Verge first reported Thursday evening. Enyo, as you're probably not aware, is the HTML framework that lived and (mostly) died with the Palm TouchPad and was later made open-source with the death of that project. Enyo also makes it relatively easy for webOS-type apps to make their way to, oh, say, Android, which we very quickly saw in apps like Paper Mache.
HP gave the following statement to our sister site, webOS Nation:
"We’re pleased with the traction Enyo has gained to date and plan to continue its development along with the open source community. The Open webOS project is on schedule and we remain committed to the roadmap announced in January.”
The question now is what will that mean for Android in the bigger scheme of things. People with severe sleep apnea are almost five times as likely to die of cancer than those who breathe easy while they sleep, according to a new study presented last week at the American Thoracic Society conference. The study, which tracked 1,500 people for 22 years, found that mild or moderate snoring also increases your risk of cancer death. Sleep apnea reduces the oxygen level in your blood; to avoid suffocating, tumors grow new blood vessels, says study author F. Javier Nieto, M.P.H., M.D., Ph.D., of the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health. These extra veins and arteries help existing tumors grow faster and give cancer cells more opportunities to spread through your bloodstream to new parts of your body.
It?s not yet clear whether sleep apnea increases your risk of getting cancer or just worsens existing cases, and more research is needed to confirm the results. But snoring is cause for concern either way?leading to accidents, depression, high blood pressure, and heart disease. If you snore and are sleepy during the day, check with your doctor, especially if you?re carrying a few extra pounds (they increase your sleep apnea risk). A total of 82,252 acres have been burned by the fire, known as the Whitewater-Baldy Complex in the Gila National Forest, fire officials reported.
The Baldy fire was reported May 9 and the Whitewater on May 16. They merged on Wednesday, and almost all of the growth has come since then as winds have whipped through the difficult terrain.
Even though the combined blaze continues to grow and is uncontained, officials said the fire behavior was not as extreme as in previous days. No new structures have been destroyed in the last 24 hours, though 12 cabins and 13 out-buildings have been lost since the fire began, officials said.
The fire, about 15 miles east of Glenwood, N.M., began with a lightning strike, officials said.
It is burning in steep, rugged terrain with mixed conifer in the Glenwood, Reserve and Wilderness ranger districts along with an area of private land known as Willow Creek Subdivision, officials said. The rough terrain has hindered firefighting efforts as has shifting winds.
In northern Nevada, high winds were expected near Topaz Lake Estates, where more than 7,500 acres have burned. That fire is 35% contained and is expected to be fully contained by Saturday.

We hope you hadn't planned too much of your late summer around the original Nokia World 2012 schedule, because the timetable has just been given a big shakeup. Instead of holding one, monolithic event in late September, Finland's phone giant is splitting the show into smaller, more targeted events. The first will start much earlier than planned, running between September 5th and 6th in Helsinki, but don't expect any big Lumia introductions: the early show is focused on carrier and store partners rather than any opportunities for a public hands-on. Details of more events are coming in the weeks ahead, and some of those gatherings we imagine will be more about new devices than wheeling and dealing.

As any high school quarterback knows, a lofty social status comes with plenty of perks. Now a study of baboons finds that such status benefits may include better health. Researchers reviewed 27 years? worth of records of illness and injury in male baboons to answer one question: Where?s the healthier place on the social pyramid, top or bottom? Each rank carries its own health hazards. Higher-status baboons mate more often, which expends more energy and requires higher levels of testosterone and hormones that can suppress the immune system. Lower-ranking males, on the other hand, are physically weaker and suffer from social stress.
The records indicated that high-status males got sick less frequently and healed faster from both injury and illness. And alpha males, who had to overcome the highest levels of immunosuppressing hormones, still healed fastest, exceeding even other high-status males.
The finding does raise another question: does top-dog status improve immune function, or is it that fast healers rise to the top of the social heap?

NEW YORK (AP) - Joe Girardi was frustrated. Six losses in seven games left the New York Yankees last in the AL East.
"I'm hoping this is rock-bottom," the manager said.
No, that's not this week. That was on May 20, 2008, 45 games into Girardi's first season as the Yankees manager - and the only season since 1994 that New York failed to make the playoffs.
As Yogi Berra says, it gets late early - especially in the Bronx. For a team that likes to constantly refer to its history, 2012 is starting to resemble 2008, when the Yankees started 20-25 and never really contended. Now they're 21-21, tied for last in the AL East with the Boston Red Sox.
New York's offensive struggles with men on base reached new lows during Monday night's 6-0 loss to the Kansas City Royals. The Yankees went 0 for 13 with runners in scoring position, the Yankees' most hitless at-bats with RISP since July 1990.
Bases loaded, no outs and they still couldn't score. Robinson Cano looked at strike three, Alex Rodriguez swung at strike three and Raul Ibanez flied out deep.
Even when they hit the ball hard, it's right at someone, prompting captain Derek Jeter to say: "At times, it looks like there's 20 people out there playing defense."
"Everything bad that could be happening right now is happening," Nick Swisher said. "We've just got to start winning."
Several teams are doing that lately at the Yankees' expense. In the last seven days, four different clubs have beaten them, with Kansas City joining Cincinnati, Toronto and Baltimore, STATS LLC said. It's the second time this year that four teams have defeated the Yankees in a single week.
A 5 1/2-game deficit in the AL East could be wiped out rather quickly, but the Yankees seem to be adrift.
Left fielder Brett Gardner has been sidelined by an elbow injury since April 17, sapping the batting order of spark and speed.
Closer Mariano Rivera is likely out for the season since tearing his right Achilles tendon while shagging fly balls at Kansas City on May 3. His replacement, David Robertson, is on the disabled list with a strained muscle in his left ribcage.
Before Rivera got hurt, the Yankees were batting .270 with runners in scoring position. Since then, they're hitting .159, including 6 for 72 (.083) in their last nine games. New York is 0-10 when failing to hit a home run.
"It's very frustrating," Rodriguez said. "We've talked about it over and over again. You can't really describe it. It's not a lot of fun obviously going out and not getting the job done. But at this point, nobody's going to feel sorry for us."
CC Sabathia (5-2, 3.78 ERA) and Ivan Nova (4-2, 5.69) have winning records, but Hideki Kuroda (3-6, 4.56) and Phil Hughes (3-5, 5.23) have lagged. Freddy Garcia (0-2, 8.22) was sent to the bullpen, eventually clearing a spot for Andy Pettitte (1-1, 2.51).
At .265, the batting average is among the AL's highest - though not up to the Yankees' standards.
And the fans are letting them know, with the boos getting louder.
"You're going to hear it on the road, and you're going to hear it at home when you don't play well," Girardi said. "It's because our fans are passionate and they want us to win. And I understand that. So do the guys in that room. If they're unhappy with us, believe me, we're probably unhappier."
In the quiet clubhouse late Monday night, several players attributed the lack of offense at times - and the losing - to bad luck.
"More than anything, we've just got to pull together. We've got to have faith in each other. We know that we're all capable of doing the job. The back of everybody's baseball card looks pretty good," Swisher said. "Obviously the start hasn't been good for a lot of us - it's been good for some of us. But we've just got to keep pushing, man, because this team is a never-give-up type of team. And regardless of where we are right now, we're going to keep fighting, man, I can promise you that."
At 31 years, 222 days, the Yankees easily started the season with the oldest average roster, according to STATS. The Royals - the youngest at 27 years, 155 days, seemed to have a lot more energy.
While acknowledging "the scoreboard definitely speaks for itself," center fielder Curtis Granderson said the Yankees just have to persevere during their slump and remain in position to make a run.
"You know you're going to have some ups and downs," he said. "Right now, as a whole, we're pretty much having a down. And that's probably the most interesting thing, the fact that there's so many guys that just haven't gotten it going yet. But that's baseball. That means the good side is when we do all finally get it going together, we're going to be very tough.
"And there's still a long time for everything to go ahead and get on the same page. So it just takes a couple things here and there, a couple balls to fall, a couple balls to go our way," he said.

If reports out of the U.K. (and this video) are to be believed, then stuntman Gary Connery today became the first person to skydive from a helicopter and land safely without a parachute.
The 42-year-old Englishman jumped from the aircraft at an elevation of 2400 feet, wearing a wingsuit intended to help him glide and manage his speed. After cruising through the air, he landed in a sea of cardboard boxes his team had set up near Henley-on-Thames, located west of London.
Plenty of aerial daredevils have been trying to build wingsuits like the one Connery used today. Back in 2010, a Popular Mechanics cover story reported on BASE jumper Jeb Corliss, who aimed to pull off the feat that Connery reported achieved today. (Corliss himself endured a horrific crash in South Africa this past January, but plans to start jumping again.) We'll let you know more about this jump as additional information comes out.
